January 7, 2011 Ronda's Corner Welcome to a new calendar year! It's amazing how fast time slips away.
I want to take a quick second to share something with everyone that turned out to be better than I could have even imagined. We received our invoice from OCLC for November and I noticed that because of your willingness to share your collections with other libraries outside our system, we received a $29.24 lending credit off that month's bill. (I know that doesn't sound like much, but we only get .44 for every title we lend.) Thinking about the big picture, that could add up to arround $300 dollars over the 10 months schools are in session. How many books can we buy with that?
Speaking of books.... I want to put in a plug for the Sylvan Dell e-books and book sets we have available for the elementary level.
There are a couple ways to access this collection. One way is through your Medianet account, just put Sylvan Dell in the search box.
Another way is to scroll down the left side of the Learning Resources webpage ( http://www.caboces.org/iss/resources ) and you will find Tumble books / Sylvan Dell e-books (10th on the list under 501 Coser section). Click and it will take you to the log on page of Medianet. Enter your log-on information and it will take you right to the Sylvan Dell logo.
Another way to access it is to go to www.casls2.org and look for the link under "e-books".
These are terrific resources. Not only do we have the e-book, but every title is available in five hard copies. Most of the titles also come in a library kit that includes the five copies of the book and a plush animal that goes along with the book. These books help to help meet the STEM initiative. There is a link with each title that gives additional ideas and resources to enrich the information being taught. Feel free to give me call if you run into any problems or if you want more information

Chicago’s PBS Station, WTTW, & U.S. Department of Education Offer Free Interactive Reading Comprehension Game
Mission to Planet 429 is an immersive, educational game funded, in part, by a “Ready to Learn” grant from the U.S. Department of Education and developed by WTTW (Chicago Public Media – Television & Interactive), Roman Coppola (The Directors Bureau) and Nukotoys (an interactive game developer), in partnership with successful turnaround schools, The Academy for Urban School Leadership.
Mission to Planet 429 follows the hilarious misadventures of rookie “Worldsplorers”.
The game’s goal is to develop reading comprehension skills in early readers (ages 6-8) and avoid a common decline in achievement in upper elementary grades – known as the “fourth grade slump.
